Into the Mists cover5-star reviewJust got a lovely 5-star review for Into the Mists

Into the Mists is a work of fantasy and magic written for young adults by author Serene Conneeley. Written as the first book in the trilogy of the same name, the story revolves around our central teenage character Carlie. In the blink of an eye, Carlie’s perfect beachside life and epic dreams come to an end when both her parents are killed. Carlie travels to Great Britain, wracked with guilt and blaming herself for her parents’ demise, only to discover she has a grandmother whom she never knew about. A grandmother who introduces her to a dark and mysterious world of pagan lore, witchcraft and magic. Here, Carlie has a chance of understanding and of salvation, but only if she’s brave enough for the journey ahead.

I adored this book for its gothic themes, accuracy of research and revelations on every page. Carlie is a typical heroine thrown into extraordinary circumstances, but her character does grow and develop into more as the book goes on. The read may be considered heavy as it’s not action on every page, but I adored the wealth of information given on the origins of paganism, its links to the modern world and how the magical concepts are put in place to fit in with the UK in the modern day. There was a delightful culture clash between Carlie and Grandmother Rose throughout which kept my heart warm. Serene Conneeley has created an intriguing and compelling witch world, and I’d recommend Into the Mists for all fantasy fans of fourteen and up.
